48th Anniversary of “A Hard Day’s Night”

July 6, 1984 “A Hard Day’s Night,” the first feature film starring The Beatles, premiered in London. Written by Alun Owen and directed by Richard Lester, the film was an instant success. The film humorously portrays an exaggerated day in the life of The Beatles.  Although the film is riddled with continuity errors and miscellaneous editing mistakes, the movie is quite entertaining. To celebrate the 48th anniversary of the film’s premiere, here are 5 little-known facts about “A Hard Day’s Night:”

1. In the opening scene, the girls chasing The Beatles into the train are real fans.

2. In the movie, Ringo is invited to “Le Cercle,” which is the same gambling club where James Bond makes his first appearance in “Dr. No.”  Both films were originally released by United Artists.

3. John Lennon’s witty, self-referential line “She looks more like him than I do” was actually dubbed into the film after shooting.  The dubbing wasn’t so subtle.

4. When the reporter asks John Lennon about his hobbies, he hands her a written note with his answer that cannot be seen by the audience.  His response is “tits.”

5.  Finally, the proposed titles for the film were “The Beatles” and “Beatlemania.” Ringo came up with the phrase “a hard day’s night” after he was exhausted from a long day of work.  The studio accepted his phrase as the title and the Beatles then recorded the song “A Hard Day’s Night” in less than 24 hours.

There’s Always Money In The Banana Stand

After years of speculation and rumors surrounding the cult classic comedy Arrested Development’s return to the small screen and foray into the large, the Huffington Post reports today that there will be 9 to ten new episodes produced in addition to a movie. And soon.

The news was announced at The New Yorker festival on Sunday. The release of the episodes and subsequent movies are set for early ’13. The episodes are planned to shine a spotlight on each character as a lead-in to the movie.

I know I’m excited to see what they come up with after all these years – the show was cancelled during it’s third season back in 2006.

It will be interesting to see if today’s audience appreciates the show’s humor as much as audiences did in 2004-2006. I guess we will see soon enough if there truly is always money in the banana stand.

Come on, Irene! Hurricane Party Must Haves and Playlist

I moved to South Beach exactly three days before Wilma hit. I watched the storm from a high floor at the Marriott South Beach, as waves and rain raged surfers hit the beach, and cops followed soon after to keep them out of the water. Only in Miami. Spent a good amount of time the next driving around the next day to view the destruction. Hotel Victor had become Hotel ictor, palm branches and telephone poles were down everywhere, I saw broken hurricane impact windows, and there was a huge crack in the front of my building that made it look as if my balcony was about to fall apart. We didn’t have power for ten days, although it was back on Ocean Drive within 48 hours. Living in Miami for the next four years, I learned a lot about hurricane preparedness. As important as water and flashlights are, the crappiest part of the hurricane and it’s aftermath was boredom and  bad attitudes. Entertainment is needed. Also alcohol. For your pleasure, and with a little help from our awesome Facebook friends, I have compiled below a playlist of storm-themed songs, a drink recipe, and some other sanity essentials. Enjoy, and most of all, stay safe!
